Parker Variant is certainly comparable as a product to the Merkur Progress and at a very similar price. Both have a 2-piece design, both bend the blade quite a bit, and both have an adjustable washer at the base of the handle. But the Parker Variant eliminates those defects that belong to the Progress and adds that extra touch to its product, making it (in our opinion), decidedly superior.
Firstly, Parker Variant is much heavier and longer than Merkur Progress (110 grams vs 88 grams / 102mm vs 80mm) but the weight is well distributed along the entire razor, eliminating the fatigue of use thanks to the almost perfect balance. The aggressiveness range of the Variant is wide and at minimum height this razor proves to be just aggressive enough (and therefore functional) compared to the Merkur Progress which is decidedly and excessively delicate and gentle when set to a minimum.
In conclusion
Those who currently use Merkur Progress for shaving will certainly not struggle to switch to Parker Variant, quickly getting used to the dimensions of this razor and rapidly discovering its inherent qualities. If instead you are users of non-adjustable safety razors, it will take a bit of experience before finding the most suitable settings. Nothing too complicated.
