Merkur safety razor closed comb 34C Metallic Grey

The Merkur 34C Metallic Grey is a two-piece safety razor designed for those seeking a traditional shave that is precise, comfortable, and consistently reliable. Known among enthusiasts as the “HD”, short for Heavy Duty, it is one of Merkur’s most iconic models thanks to its perfect balance of weight, control, and skin comfort. The Metallic Grey finish adds an elegant and modern appearance while preserving the classic soul of the design. It is an ideal razor for those entering the world of wet shaving with a solid, intuitive, and Made in Germany tool.

The heart of the Merkur 34C Metallic Grey is its closed comb head, a versatile and comfortable solution for everyday shaving. Compared to an open comb, the closed comb offers a more protective contact with the skin and makes it easier to find the correct shaving angle. This makes it particularly suitable for those looking for a balanced safety razor capable of delivering clean and close shaving results without being overly aggressive.

The two-piece construction makes the Merkur 34C practical and robust. To insert the blade, simply unscrew the knob at the base of the handle, lift the top cap, and position the razor blade. This system keeps the blade firmly stable during shaving and makes the razor easy to clean and maintain over time. Its 91 g weight contributes to a controlled shave: the razor works with its own mass, helping avoid excessive pressure on the skin.

The straight foam edge head is a Merkur geometry refined over decades. Its purpose is to guide the blade steadily and accompany each pass across the face with a smooth and secure feeling. The wide blade opening allows soap and hair to flow away easily during shaving, keeping the blade cleaner and promoting a more hygienic and tidy shave. This detail also makes the Merkur 34C practical when using rich and dense lathers typical of traditional wet shaving.

Why choose a closed comb safety razor

A closed comb safety razor is often the smartest choice for those seeking a classic shave that is effective yet controllable. The closed comb helps maintain a good level of protection between the blade and the skin, making the shave more predictable and comfortable. This does not mean sacrificing efficiency: with the right blade, proper skin preparation, and a well-built lather, the Merkur 34C delivers a close, smooth, and enjoyable shave suitable even for frequent use.
