Merkur safety razor 34 Special Edition 1896 Stainless Steel
Merkur 34 Special Edition 1896: the stainless steel safety razor that celebrates 125 years of German mastery
The safety razor Merkur 34 Special Edition 1896 blends heritage, modern precision and premium materials to deliver a shaving experience that delights enthusiasts and anyone ready to upgrade daily face care. Created to honour Merkur’s very first production run of 1896, this Heavy-Duty model in satin-finished steel preserves a unique legacy while embracing modern technologies. The result is a compact, robust, well-balanced and exceptionally effective tool.
From the first touch you can sense the build quality: the turned handle in 1.4305 stainless steel provides stability, while the satin-finished 316L head shields the blade from corrosive agents and ensures virtually unlimited longevity. Deep knurling keeps your grip secure even with lather-coated fingers. The “HD” (Heavy Duty) nickname is no accident: at 79 grams (225 grams including the gift box) the Merkur 34 Special Edition has the ideal mass to let the blade glide with minimal pressure, reducing irritation and accidental nicks.
Why choose the Merkur 34 Special Edition 1896
Whether you are new to wet shaving or a seasoned devotee, this safety razor offers a blend of efficiency, comfort and elegance. The centre of gravity sits perfectly at mid-handle, allowing precise movements around neck and cheeks. A closed comb with a generous blade gap lets lather and cut hairs flow away, keeping the cutting surface hygienically clean throughout the session. The 1896 special edition also includes a genuine-leather case and a pack of blades, turning the purchase into a premium gift.

Competitive advantages over multi-blade systems
- Less irritation: a single sharp blade cuts hair at skin level without tugging or stressing the epidermis.
- Economic savings: DE blades cost far less per unit than multi-blade cartridges.
- Sustainability: an all-metal body, easy blade recycling and a drastic reduction in plastic waste.
- Absolute precision: the closed-comb geometry offers superior control on edges, moustaches and sideburns.
- Quick maintenance: a rinse, a wipe-down and a light touch of oil keep it in perfect condition.
Practical tips for a flawless shave
- Prepare your skin with warm water or a shower to open pores and soften the beard.
- Use a badger or synthetic brush to build a dense lather that protects the skin.
- Make the first pass with the grain, then follow with cross passes for an ultra-smooth result.
- Rinse the safety razor frequently under warm water to clear lather residue.
- Let the natural weight of the Merkur 34 do the work: avoid pressure and keep an angle of about 30°.
- After use, remove the blade, dry every part with a soft cloth and store the razor in the leather case.
Maintenance and longevity
Thanks to the combination of AISI 1.4305 and 316L stainless steels, this safety razor withstands humidity, aggressive soaps and temperature swings. A thorough monthly clean in warm water with mild soap, plus a soft-bristle brush, removes limescale and residue. An occasional drop of mineral oil on the handle screw keeps the action smooth for years.
Elevated shaving experience
The Merkur 34 Special Edition 1896 embodies traditional shaving philosophy: unhurried movements, attention to detail and quality products. A well-balanced safety razor reduces skin stress and transforms routine into a gratifying moment. A single blade encourages quick healing of micro-cuts and preserves the skin’s natural hydrolipid film.
A sustainable investment
Choosing this safety razor means cutting household plastic waste and keeping annual replacement costs low. The recyclable cardboard gift box, together with the genuine-leather case, rounds out a product designed to last decades and be passed down through generations.
The Merkur 34 Special Edition 1896 is far more than a simple shaving tool: it embodies history, engineering and a passion for quality shaving, ready to accompany you every day with smooth, precise and skin-friendly results.
Made in Germany
Tightening a safety razor correctly does not mean cranking it down hard until you damage the threads. Proper tightening usually involves a small final turn once you’ve reached the stop. In addition, to preserve the handle’s threading, it’s recommended to always join the head and handle while keeping them perfectly straight and aligned.
A well-maintained safety razor lasts a long time and stays looking good, which is why cleaning after every use is an essential step. Daily maintenance doesn’t require complicated procedures: after shaving, rinse thoroughly with warm water and a mild cleanser (such as hand soap or shampoo), then dry each part carefully.
We also recommend not leaving the blade installed and dirty in the razor. If it stays damp and covered with residue, the blade can start micro-oxidation; over time these marks can transfer or leave stains on the razor as well, worsening the appearance of the finish.
Special attention for zamak razors: with this material it’s important to disassemble, rinse, and dry every single component after use. In particular, the top cap thread is an area where water and residue can easily build up: if neglected, over time this can trigger corrosion and wear, eventually weakening the thread and compromising functionality.
To protect materials and finishes, avoid any “extreme” methods: do not boil the razor, do not put it in the dishwasher, and do not use harsh products or aggressive procedures. Even on high-quality razors, these practices can damage chrome plating, anodizing, and other coatings.
Do you have a brass razor and want to restore its shine? A simple remedy is to soak the components in a bowl with lemon juice for about 10–15 minutes. Then rinse and dry with a soft, scratch-free cloth for a clean, bright finish.
