Merkur 22C: the safety razor that blends tradition, ergonomics, and versatility
The safety razor Merkur 22C is the perfect choice for anyone who wants a traditional shave without giving up modern technology. First released in the 1920s and refined for over a century, this matt-chrome model proves that high-quality materials and smart design can coexist in a single product built to last. The brass handle, cut with a diamond knurl, offers a firm grip even when your fingers are slick with lather, while the die-cast zinc head provides excellent stability and heat distribution with every stroke.
Why choose the Merkur 22C
From the very first use, the sense of control is clear: its 104 mm length lets you guide the razor naturally over cheeks, chin, and neck, while the balanced 65 g weight lets gravity do the work instead of pressing hard on the skin. This reduces irritation, accidental nicks, and redness. The matt chrome surface is more than an aesthetic touch—the satin finish cuts glare and improves grip even with wet hands.

Advantages over multi-blade razors
- Lower environmental impact: an all-metal body that can be reused almost indefinitely and easily recyclable blades drastically cut plastic waste.
- Long-term savings: double-edge blades cost a fraction of proprietary cartridges.
- Less skin irritation: a single, high-quality blade reduces contact points with the skin and limits ingrown hairs.
- Maximum precision: the slim head profile lets you shape sideburns, moustaches, and edges with unmatched control.
- Easy maintenance: a quick rinse under warm water and a wipe with a soft cloth keep it in perfect condition.
Quick guide to optimal use
- Wet your face with warm water to soften the hair and open the pores.
- Build a rich, protective lather with a brush and a high-quality soap or cream.
- Hold the safety razor at about a 30° angle to the skin and let its weight do the work—do not press.
- Make the first pass with the grain, then one or two cross passes for an extra-smooth finish.
- Rinse the razor head frequently to prevent build-up of lather and cut hairs.
- When finished, remove the blade, dry the components, and store them in a dry place.
Maintenance and longevity
The matt-chrome coating protects the brass and zinc from corrosion and superficial scratches. Once a month, fully disassemble the safety razor and soak the parts in warm water with a few drops of mild soap; use a soft toothbrush to remove limescale and residue. Dry each component carefully, then apply a tiny drop of mineral oil to the handle screw to keep the closing action smooth.
A tailored shaving experience
Switching heads takes only a moment: the closed-comb version delivers a gentle daily shave, while the open comb handles three-day stubble or coarser body hair with ease. This modularity also makes the Merkur 22C ideal for women’s shaving on legs or underarms, where the long handle offers excellent control.

Tightening a safety razor correctly does not mean cranking it down hard until you damage the threads. Proper tightening usually involves a small final turn once you’ve reached the stop. In addition, to preserve the handle’s threading, it’s recommended to always join the head and handle while keeping them perfectly straight and aligned.
A well-maintained safety razor lasts a long time and stays looking good, which is why cleaning after every use is an essential step. Daily maintenance doesn’t require complicated procedures: after shaving, rinse thoroughly with warm water and a mild cleanser (such as hand soap or shampoo), then dry each part carefully.
We also recommend not leaving the blade installed and dirty in the razor. If it stays damp and covered with residue, the blade can start micro-oxidation; over time these marks can transfer or leave stains on the razor as well, worsening the appearance of the finish.
Special attention for zamak razors: with this material it’s important to disassemble, rinse, and dry every single component after use. In particular, the top cap thread is an area where water and residue can easily build up: if neglected, over time this can trigger corrosion and wear, eventually weakening the thread and compromising functionality.
To protect materials and finishes, avoid any “extreme” methods: do not boil the razor, do not put it in the dishwasher, and do not use harsh products or aggressive procedures. Even on high-quality razors, these practices can damage chrome plating, anodizing, and other coatings.
Do you have a brass razor and want to restore its shine? A simple remedy is to soak the components in a bowl with lemon juice for about 10–15 minutes. Then rinse and dry with a soft, scratch-free cloth for a clean, bright finish.
