Merkur Progress safety razor Adjustable Progress 500 Bright-Chrome
When you are looking for a safety razor that combines elegance, precision, and German tradition, the Merkur Progress 500 is a natural choice. Created in the 1950s and continually refined, this two-piece model retains a clean design enhanced by a Bright-Chrome finish that brightens the bathroom and stands the test of time. The knurled knob, engraved with the MERKUR logo, offers a secure grip even with wet hands, while the die-cast zinc head ensures strength and durability.
Tailor-made cutting versatility
The true heart of this safety razor is its blade-exposure adjustment system. By turning the numbered dial, you can set the gap between 0.6 and 1.6 mm: from an ultra-gentle shave, ideal for sensitive skin, to a close and deep finish, perfect after several days of growth. Just a few motions let you find the ideal configuration and turn your daily routine into a personalised ritual.
Premium-quality materials
The combination of a solid brass handle and die-cast zinc head, protected by a double-galvanised layer with Bright-Chrome coating, ensures corrosion resistance and an impeccable appearance over time. Every Merkur Progress safety razor is designed, manufactured, and assembled in Germany to meticulous standards—a tribute to mechanical engineering that makes a difference from the very first use.

Whether it’s your daily pre-office shave or a weekly tidy-up, the Progress 500 always delivers the desired result.
Easy maintenance
- Unscrew the bottom knob to separate the handle and head.
- Rinse each part thoroughly under warm water to remove soap and stubble.
- Dry with a soft cloth to preserve the shine of the Bright Chrome.
- If necessary, add a drop of mineral oil to the thread to ensure smooth dial rotation.
By caring for your safety razor this way, you will keep the precision of the blade-to-head fit intact and ensure years of impeccable shaves.

Tightening a safety razor correctly does not mean cranking it down hard until you damage the threads. Proper tightening usually involves a small final turn once you’ve reached the stop. In addition, to preserve the handle’s threading, it’s recommended to always join the head and handle while keeping them perfectly straight and aligned.
A well-maintained safety razor lasts a long time and stays looking good, which is why cleaning after every use is an essential step. Daily maintenance doesn’t require complicated procedures: after shaving, rinse thoroughly with warm water and a mild cleanser (such as hand soap or shampoo), then dry each part carefully.
We also recommend not leaving the blade installed and dirty in the razor. If it stays damp and covered with residue, the blade can start micro-oxidation; over time these marks can transfer or leave stains on the razor as well, worsening the appearance of the finish.
Special attention for zamak razors: with this material it’s important to disassemble, rinse, and dry every single component after use. In particular, the top cap thread is an area where water and residue can easily build up: if neglected, over time this can trigger corrosion and wear, eventually weakening the thread and compromising functionality.
To protect materials and finishes, avoid any “extreme” methods: do not boil the razor, do not put it in the dishwasher, and do not use harsh products or aggressive procedures. Even on high-quality razors, these practices can damage chrome plating, anodizing, and other coatings.
Do you have a brass razor and want to restore its shine? A simple remedy is to soak the components in a bowl with lemon juice for about 10–15 minutes. Then rinse and dry with a soft, scratch-free cloth for a clean, bright finish.
